The goal of life is to love God above all else and to treat others with the same level of respect as oneself. All of the prophets and laws mentioned in the Bible’s Old and New Testaments “rest on these two commandments.” (Matthew 22:37–40)
It is true that God, not man, was the first to demonstrate His love for all of humanity. (John 3:16, John 4:8, John 4:19) Therefore, when God commanded to love the Lord your God, He simply meant for humanity to return His love.
God intended to have loving fellowship with the man (Adam and Eve) through open communication. He also intended for Adam and Eve to love one another and pass that love on to their future progeny. But when sin came to earth and corrupted the basic foundation of human existence, that purpose was defeated.
